Bonnie, I found you through Youtube and am intrigued by the 10 Minutes to Better Study Skills! My home-schooled daughter is 16 and dual-enrolling in our local community college and currently in her first class. She is struggling with note-taking! She also took the SAT in June and scored poorly in the reading portion, especially the "passage" reading. I'm beginning to make the connection with these two problems... there seems to be a struggle, for her, in pulling out keys points in a written document, or passage, and in an oral lecture. She tends to want to write down too much from a lecture and gets overwhelmed when given a passage to read with questions to answer, especially when timed. For writing assignments, she is gifted in vocabulary usage, spelling and grammar, but the process of writing becomes a long, drawn-out process. She wants to "hover" over a slew of ideas but struggles to land the plane. When she does land the plane, it will take hours. Will your book and the forms therein help us? Karen McGoldKaren, There is a direct connection with the ability to pull out the main idea and important details and note-taking. You want to be sure the notes you take are meaningful and when you don't know how to quickly pull out that information from either reading a passage or listening to a lecture, you are 'sunk'. That is one of the specific reasons I designed the graphic organizers in Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills in the manner that I did. These forms not only help you with note-taking, they also become a 'study-guide' for you when you are reviewing the material or answering the questions at the end of a section or chapter. They can also be used to learn how to take notes while listening to a lecture or presentation. The graphic organizer fill-in-the-blank forms are designed specifically with your daughter in mind. Another product that will also help her is our game the Comprehension Zone because it teaches you specifically how to pull out the main idea, details, and sequence what you read or listen to in a game format. It can be played for both reading or listening comprehension. Hi, My question is what is the best sequence of teaching spelling patterns to dyslexic students? Which spelling patterns in particular will be the most tough for the dyslexics to grasp & what knock-on effect can they have on the learning of other patterns? Which doors would be opened in reading & writing by knowing a certain pattern & which would be closed if the pattern was not known?? Kindly explain. Thanks Aisha. Aisha, There are only 8 spelling patterns in the English language. I teach spelling with the spelling books - Making Spelling Sense and Making Spelling Sense II. The spelling books are designed to work with dyslexics of all ages. In addition to teaching spelling patterns it addresses both auditory and visual processing at the same time. I always start with the vowel/consonant spelling pattern as it is the easiest one to learn and the most predominant spelling pattern in the English language. Then I go on to the vowel consonant silent e spelling pattern. The other spelling patterns follow. As you gradually introduce the patterns with multiple lessons per spelling pattern, I don't think there is really one pattern that would be considered the hardest one. When you understand the structure of the language you can not only spell thousands of words, you can also decode thousands of words. Teaching spelling with this spelling program addresses both encoding (spelling - writing the word down) and decoding (sounding out words - reading) simultaneously. Bonnie Terry, M. The CNN Survey concludes that at some point most parents turn to medication as a treatment to deal with their child's ADHD. The second most effective treatment parents have used is to make a switch in schools - to a school that is better equipped to work with children with attention deficit disorder. When I speak to parents about attention deficit disorder I always try to be sure they are in the know on what they can do as well as what some of the best ways to advocate for their child in the school system. Many teachers are not equipped to deal with attention deficit disorder and don't want to deal with it. However, I don't know that there is a classroom in the US, or worldwide for that matter that doesn't have at least one ADHD student in the class. (Approximately 9-10% of the population has ADHD). So, in my opinion what is key is for parents to build a strong working relationship with their child's teacher to help them help their child navigate through their education while learning to deal with their ADHD. There are many behavioral ways of dealing with attention deficit disorder that can be easily implemented in the classroom. Additionally, medication is sometimes warranted, but I always say, exhaust every other possibility first. Then if you still need to go the medication route, do it. If your child needed eye glasses you would not 'blink an eye' over the decision, you would get them glasses. If your child needed a hearing aid, again, you would do it. If your child does need medication to be able to function in a classroom because every avenue has been pursued and they still can't focus, do it. But, medication is only one piece of the puzzle. Even with medication, behavioral interventions often still need to be in place and followed through on. So educating your child's teacher is often imperative in helping them have a good school year. When you create a good working relationship with your child's teacher you will have greater success in helping them understand what they need to know and do to help your child. Parents want to help their kids improve their skills. That is a given as far as I'm concerned. All parents want the best for their children and when learning reading, writing, or spelling is hard they often don't know where to turn. Parents often spend a small fortune seeking the help they need for their child. I know what it is like, being a parent as well as a teacher. I can't tell you how many times I've purchased materials that haven't worked. That is what I keep in mind when I design materials to use with my struggling (LD, dyslexic, ADHD, or gifted) students - whether they are in 1st grade, 5th grade, 8th grade, high school, or even adult students. I want to create materials that will work, that will improve their reading skills, writing skills, and spelling skills and be affordable at the same time. It truly is one of my passions. Each reading, writing, and spelling product is developed out of the needs of my students and is tested with them to be sure they work. We look at ease of usage and the results the reading, writing, and spelling materials produce. But, I don't want you to take my word for it. After all, I created the materials, although I am truly inspired when I create them, so I can't take total credit at all!
