One of my sons was really overwhelmed by his writing assignments. He would stare at blank sheets of paper, frozen, not know how to start writing. He would also have to reread his text due to his fluency (visual tracking) problems. This brought his comprehension down and made it difficult for him to take notes on what he had read.
Whenever your child has trouble understanding what they have read, any type of writing assignment becomes difficult if not impossible. As a teacher and learning disabilities specialist, I had run into this problem often with my students. It didn't matter if they had an identified learning disability, dyslexia, or were 'falling through the cracks' in the school system. Most of my students faced this problem at one time or another. But, when writing assignments consistently overwhelmed one of my own children, the problem really hit home!
My son was in the 8th grade and was told to write a paragraph for homework. This happened every week. And every week he would get low marks on his papers, usually C’s and sometimes D’s. This didn’t make any sense to me because he was in a gifted class for language arts.
One night I was so frustrated I blurted out, “Didn’t anyone ever teach you how to write a paragraph?” He said, “No.” Obviously I was speechless for a few moments. So, I told him what I knew, the structure of the basic paragraph.
Fortunately, he took me up on my suggestion, and wrote the paragraph with the structure I had given him. He got his first B on a writing assignment. He was very surprised and happy about that! He kept following my structure (system) for several more weeks, and then he started getting A’s on his assignments.
I continued to work with my students in the same manner, but sometimes they still struggled. I started creating fill-in-the-blank forms for my students and my own children to use. Then the fun began, because these students that had been unable to write paragraphs or even take notes from what they had read were able to fill in the blanks. Now they even had a study guide to review when they need to study for a test.
This greatly improved their ability in their writing skills and study skills. Writing and studying became so much easier! I ended up creating so many different fill-in-the-blank forms; they ended up covering every type of writing that my children and my students encountered. The parents of my students asked where they could get the forms, so I turned them into a book and added a few more writing tips too.
I’ve been teaching students from 1st grade through high school and sometimes even adults over the last 35 years. When I designed the forms, I designed them with those grades in mind. So my 1st and 2nd graders use some of the forms, my 3rd – 5th graders use more of them, and my 6th and above students use all of the forms.
(I really do not like having to recreate things or buy a lot of products when I work with so many different ages, so this product covers all ages.)
From over 35 years of teaching and research, I learned how children learn best and how to teach comprehension. My kids that had trouble with writing often had specific areas of perception that were not working as efficiently as they should or could be. This contributed to their being overwhelmed with writing.
Because of this, I incorporated many areas of perception into the book. With using the fill-in-the-blank forms, they would be not only learning how to write, they would also be strengthening their areas of perception at the same time.
Think about it, your child can use the fill-in-the-blank forms when they first start reading their social studies, science, or any book they are reading for content and have a study guide to review before test time. Just using the forms once makes it easier for your child to take notes and write paragraph summaries from their notes.
They also improve their comprehension, shorten their study time and improve their retention of material because they have processed the material in several ways. And they improve their perception all at the same time.
Recent research has shown that students can be taught "how to learn". Strategies used in Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills™ focus on how to learn and how to effectively use what has been learned.
