The Comprehension Zone™:
Rocket Rap™

Improve your child's reading comprehension

The Comprehension Zone: Rocket Rap

Whether students need help identifying factual information, recognizing the main idea, or sequencing information, The Comprehension Zone™: Rocket Rap™ can help! Your child or student will learn to read content material for meaning (main idea, details, and sequence of events) the first time they read their books. Everyone succeeds the first time they play because the game is self-correcting. The game comes with a vinyl game board that is set in outer space with 100 story cards. It's easy to learn and can be played with two to four players or four teams of two.

Have you seen your child read their pages over and over or flip back and forth through their text looking for the answers?

Tired of hearing your child sigh with frustration over their homework?

Have you ever seen your child slump into their chair after reading their assignment?

Has your child ever flung or felt like flinging his textbook at you? My son did…

When my middle child was in the 6th grade he had the history book from ____! It was the most boring, dry, and difficult history book I had seen in a long time! He would read the chapter and then try to answer the questions in the ‘Chapter Check Up’ section. He couldn’t answer the questions, so he reread the section. Again he couldn’t answer the questions, so he read the section a 3rd time.

That’s when he flung his book at me, stating, “Mom, I’ve read this 3 times and I still can’t find the answers. You do it!”

I answered him, “No, but I’ll show you how to read it the right way, so that you will know the answers they are looking for.”

Does this sound familiar to you? Does your child understand what they have read the first time, or do they need to reread the selection? Over the years I’ve had a number of students that really had a hard time pulling out the main idea or details of what they read, especially when reading their social studies or science books. Some of these students had identified learning disabilities or dyslexia. Some of them were 'falling through the cracks', struggling to get their assignments done.

I first noticed this problem during my first year of teaching. I had a student that read aloud beautifully. The problem was, she didn't have a clue about what she had read. To listen to her read you would never have guessed that she was utterly clueless about the content she had read.

Teaching her how to read for meaning was daunting. Her whole body tensed up as soon as she had finished reading the assignment. She was unable to answer the simplest question about the story she had just read. I needed to help her body to relax when I was teaching her so that her mind would be able to retain the information she had read.

That's when I got the idea to make a game to help her learn how to pull out the main idea or details of what she read. This worked very well for her! Her comprehension started to improve and after playing for several months, it had grown by leaps and bounds.

Years later, in my learning center I had one student in particular come into each session with his social studies homework and he absolutely struggled with it. He had such a hard time answering the questions. Social studies was so hard. He hated having to struggle all the time, so I pulled out my comprehension game and we played before he began his assignment.

Before doing the social studies or science assignments, my students played The Comprehension Zone™. It actually taught them how to read for meaning. One of the great things about this was that they not only got to practice finding the main idea or details, but he got to see how others that were playing did it too. This is called modeling.

After playing The Comprehension Zone™, my struggling student did his social studies assignment with much more ease. And, he kept getting better at reading for information too. Additionally, he really learned how to find the important information that he should be using when he took notes.

Now, your child can actually learn and have fun playing The Comprehension Zone™. Your child's homework time can become a lot less stressful. Playing improves your child's learning skills and makes your life easier, even improving your relationship with your child.

When I first published The Comprehension Zone™, I had one set of cards to use with the game. Then teachers and parents said they needed cards that were easier for their children to read. So I ended up writing two more sets of cards. This made it so the game could be played with a child in 2nd grade, 5th grade, and the 9th grade at the same time. And then I realized I could even have a 1st grade student play it at the same time for listening comprehension.

Now, any of my students could play the game for listening comprehension even with a set of cards that was above their reading level. This really expanded the grade level usage and the students could play the game for reading or listening comprehension.

A number of years after developing The Comprehension Zone™ I attended a workshop that concentrated on improving reading comprehension of kids based on 25 years of research from the University of Kansas (SIM Strategies). To my amazement, the method they were teaching was the same method I used in my game. From my hands-on experience with my kids I knew the difference it had made in their lives, but having the research behind it really validated my work.

Remember, most kids think of themselves as good game players, most kids really love games, most kids feel that games are fun. The Comprehension Zone™ is designed to help your child or students improve or solve their reading or listening comprehension difficulties.

Imagine your family playing The Comprehension Zone™. Sitting around the table, learning together as a family, interacting, playing, and laughing while learning. Your child will see how you find the main idea or details and be able to improve their comprehension skills by following your model. (Step-by-step hints are provided in the game for finding the main idea and details.) Homework time will become a time of pleasure. Their self-confidence and self-esteem will improve.

Don’t let your child spend another day frustrated, trying to get the meaning out of what they read. It really doesn’t have to be so-o-o hard. Once you know the secrets to reading for meaning, reading becomes an exciting adventure. You CAN make a difference in your child's life today. Improve their reading and listening comprehension by simply playing a game. You can actually help your child while you play. And playing ultimately reduces homework stress and time and creates more family and free time.

Children that comprehend what they read have lifelong skills for success.
