Reading Help Is More Than Reading Comprehension

March 25th, 2015

As a parent I think I’m quite like every other parent. I knew my son was bright, but we still had homework struggles. And I bet that you know your child is bright too and you still have homework struggles. It seems like the struggles will never go away. You know how painful it is to see your child struggle or take forever to read their assignments. You just want to take that pain away. You so want to see your child read with ease. I’m here to tell you, learning reading doesn’t have to be so hard! There are a few things to check into when your child is struggling with reading. You need to become the detective. Their reading problems are typically due to more than reading comprehension problems. In fact, they can be due to one or more of the following reasons.

dyslexia symptoms, ADHD symptoms
  • Phonics Related Problem In addition to reading comprehension, reading problems can be due to problems with phonics. Phonics related reading problems are when your child ‘jumbles’ or mispronounces the words as they are trying to decode(the ability to sound out printed words) or encode (the ability to put letters to the sounds that make up a word). You have no idea what the word is that they are trying to read until you look at it yourself.

Learn to sound out words and spell at the same time with Making Spelling Sense or the Awaken the Scholar Within Spelling and Phonics Program.

  • Reading Fluency/Visual Tracking Problem When it takes your child what seems like forever to read the sentence or they have skipped, omitted or repeated words when reading.

Improve phonics and reading fluency with Five Minutes to Better Reading Skills or our Awaken the Scholar Within Programs. [This skill is so important it is included in four of our ASW Programs.]

  • Reading Comprehension Problems Due to Lack of Language or Vocabulary This prevents comprehension or being able to understand what you read.

Learn language building techniques in our (ASW) Awaken the Scholar Within Reading, Writing, and Study Skills Program and our ASW Premium Program.

  • Reading Comprehension Problems Due to Not Knowing How to Read for Meaning Comprehension can falter when your child doesn’t understand how to read for meaning. Where will they find the main idea? Where are the details? How do they think about what they read?

Learn how to read for meaning with the Comprehension Zone Game and our (ASW) Awaken the Scholar Within Reading, Writing, and Study Skills Program and our ASW Premium Program.

You can build all of these reading skills, including reading comprehension with short exercises and activities.

“I just wanted to email you to let you know how I am doing. Being in the 3rd week of the ASW Reading, Writing, and Study Skills Program, I have fully gotten into the swing of things. I find the word drills and therapy worksheets to be very relaxing. With the test taking lessons I have noticed an improvement with reading and noting each section that I read through. I feel like I am able to understand what I’m reading the first time around instead of have to read the same section over and over, just to name a few things The program has really helped me and I can’t wait to get through the rest.” Corinne J from MA
